Overview

Committed to ethical volunteering and adhering to responsible travelling, EDGE of AFRICA strives to provide team members with a life-changing, authentic African experience via participation in sustainable projects that are making actual, tangible differences in the lives of the communities where EDGE of AFRICA is involved.

The EDGE of AFRICA ethos is to encourage empowerment by promoting self-worth & education through responsible eco-tourism.

We aim to work at a grassroots level, meaning we work alongside locals, hearing what their needs and dreams are. We aim to empower more and this is an instrumental factor in which projects we decide to take on.

I went with a group of people from the Newfound land with zero ideas of how my two weeks with Edge of Africa would entail. Our group was joined with others from Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hong Kong. Together we built gardens for elementary schools, a sandbox for a pre-school, painted various school buildings including rooms of a school for the deaf and blind, built concrete stairs for a mother of 5 to fit her walker/cane size to easily access her home, played sports with local kids, and built lasting memories and friendships that will span our lifetimes!!! Edge of Africa is absolutely an Amazing Experience! It's hard to explain the overwhelming awesomeness of the Edge of Africa experience. Oh, and be the way, we got out and explored everything from Beaches, caves, wild animal parks, shark diving, a wild safari and MORE! I hope I can do this trip again soon! Dave F.

My experience with this organization has been amazing. They do an incredible job that I think really makes an impact on other peolple's life, not only those who they help in the community, but most of all on those who join them as volunteers. I'm sure that all who desire to change their life for better, should join them and make this experience, because it's worth it!! You'll meet some great, extraordinary people and live a life changing time. I didn't realize how much you can actually do before being with EoA. I wanna thank them for the chance they gave me.
So, make up your mind, make an impact!!!

Hi :) I'm Emma, and I visited Knysna, South Africa for 6 weeks in 2010, as part of the Edge of Africa organisation. I can honestly say I wouldn't change a thing about the experience...except maybe to say I wish I could have stayed much longer! As part of a drama degree, the work I did was mainly with a community arts organisation called Mad about Art. I got to work with a various groups of school children aged 9-14, and created a show with them based on their hopes and goals for the future.

I think a massive part of why anyone wants to volunteer is that they care about the communities they will work with, and most of all they want to make a difference. At least, I know that's how I felt. And I think the reason I came away from South Africa feeling like I'd achieved this, is that Edge of Africa really believes in having the volunteers spend as much time as possible with the communitites they are working with, sp I got a better understanding, and also got to know people I am blessed to have met. Edge of Africa listened to our ideas, and valued our opinions throughout the experience, trusting in our ability to work with the communitites in a positive way. This trust in me as a volunteer inspired me to do the best I could possibly do in the (too!) short time I was out there.

As a Theatre student, my main focus was on arts in the school communites. But what I loved about the organisation is that they took the time to show the volunteers around all their other projects, and gave us the chance to work in other areas when they could. This meant we met more incredible people, and I came away from the experience feeling like I'd learnt so much more because of this. It was really amazing to get to see and help with so many projects in the area, and visiting the various projects showed just how much work Edge of Africa does, and how dedicated the team are to making sustainable change within so many communities.

Edge of Africa is truly, truly special.
