Overview
El Nahual is a fully licensed non-profit organization funded by its Spanish language school, located on the outskirts of Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala. We run educational programs at five local schools in addition to our main program, an after school club called Manos de Colores, at our community centre. The majority of our volunteer placements involves teaching English and Art. Alternatively our volunteers can help us with fundraising, publicity, administrative tasks and website updating.
Since we are a language school, most of our volunteers take Spanish classes in the mornings and volunteers in the afternoons, although taking classes is not a requirement. However, we recommend some classes for those who are not yet comfortable with their Spanish.

I had the time of my life at El Nahual in 2010. Planned to stay couple of months and ended up with almost a year. You just can't stop this experience. Since then I always want to go back...some day! :) I was looking for an opportunity to give back to society, and for those in need, and it resulted in receiving so much love from the local children and other volunteers. This gives you enough motivation and energy to do your English classes in the schools or work with the little ones in the afternoon, which can be challenging indeed. What you can expect: experiencing rural Guatemalan life, a beautiful country, international friendships and seeing yourself growing in different situations. Results: you can make a difference!
I highly recommend El Nahual for everyone.

El Nahual is a great organization if you are looking to volunteer without paying, have a meaningful experience, and spend time with adorable kids while improving your spanish! The spanish school is located at the center, which while always needing more supplies for the kids, is a beautiful and well run place. Also, if you are looking to get some experience teaching english as a foriegn language, because of el nahual's relationship with local elementary and middle schools you will most likely have the opportunity to become the primary english teacher for up to 15 different classrooms! Hectic but rewarding. The coordinators are also super helpful so shoot them an email ( from the website) with any questions.
