Overview

Overview

CasaSito is an established grassroots organization in Guatemala that increases educational opportunities in rural areas so that indigenous children living in poverty can attend school, obtain quality education & gain the skills to improve their lives. CasaSito has two approaches for addressing educational needs. We offer scholarships and work closely with local learning centers and communities to provide in-depth and extensive support for students & families. Those who receive our support will become leaders in their families, communities & beyond. They will value education, health, and personal relationships. They will strive to reach their potential & lift themselves & their families out of poverty.

I have volunteered abroad with 3 different organizations so far in my life and CasaSito gave me the most tailored opportunity I have ever had. I was looking to do very specific work and even though I was there for a very few short 10 days, they put a lot of time in to helping make the trip into what I was looking for. For example, they skyped with me a few times before I left and have been in communication with me still as I have wanted to have a sustainable relationship with the communities I've worked with. For example, they have helped get follow up information to the communities after I left. They were also good about helping me work on the small budget I had and gave me a range of accommodation options to balance my living standards with how much money I could spend. They even helped me translate materials into Spanish since I didn't speak Spanish well and connected me with other volunteers to help develop a volunteer network interested in similar work. I also had the opportunity to be connected to some communities I would have never been exposed to otherwise. They are a growing organization with many growing opportunities, where the right volunteers can go very far if they work with CasaSito.

They are great about emailing. So just shoot them an email and you can have a frank conversation about what you can do with them.

CasaSito was amazing. I traveled as part of a University group in August 2012 to the Muj'bab'yol project outside Xela, Guatemala. This was our organization's second time working on the project in the last five years.

The work there was quite meaningful. We were working shoulder-to-shoulder with members of the community and were welcomed with open arms. CasaSito's connections there were the reason we were able to share in that opportunity.

Apart from the high-quality volunteering portion, CasaSito also arranged excellent tours of other portions of Guatemala for one all-inclusive price. I highly recommend the organization's judgment for travelers unfamiliar with the area.

Also, the volunteer house in Antigua is absolutely beautiful!
