Overview

Overview

Global Citizens Network recognizes the interdependence of people around the world, and that social and economic injustice, racial and ethnic inequality, and ecological loss affect all people. But through cooperative effort, individuals of all cultures can experience and enhance their ability to make a difference in their community and their world. To foster that cooperation, Global Citizens Network sends short-term teams of volunteers to communities in other cultures where participants immerse themselves in the culture and daily life of the community. Each volunteer team is partnered with a local grassroots organization active in meeting local needs. Global Citizens Network creates a worldwide network of people and organizations committed to addressing global issues.

I was 14 when I took my first GCN trip to Bukoba, TZ. It was the greatest experience I could have asked for, although at the time I didn't realize it. 14 year old's aren't very outward thinking and I certainly wasn't an exception. In fact, I credit to getting me out of my shell and while I was terrified at first, I grew to love where I was, who I was with, and learned to appreciate what I was experiencing.

GCN is about volunteering but they stress the fact that thier travel isn't just about the project and the manual labor but rather about the exchange. GCN has taught me cross cultural skills that I will have for the rest of my life and how learning from someone else can really help you as a person. I highly recommend these trips for teenagers and their families. Every experience I've had has been incredible and eye opening, I can't wait for my next GCN trip!
