Sonati is really a great organization! I was volunteering 5 months mainly as a trekking guide there and went with tourists on treks to the beautiful volcanoes. That's the way how this organization finances their free environmental education, so they provide tours and have a hostel, where all the profits go to the environmental education programme. This is really the perfect volunteer job for everyone who loves outdoors, nature and hiking and has a good physical condition, because you get to know so much of Nicaragua and it was always such an adventure and a lot of fun.
Other opportunities for volunteers at Sonati are working at the reception of their hostel or working with the Environmental Education Team. And they have also other projects, for example while I was there they were constructing a playground made of recycled materials in a quite poor part of Leon. So they are always looking for volunteers and they treat their volunteers very well, so there is a nice volunteer's house, where you can live, and they regularly organize team activities, which are always great fun. The team is very nice and most of them speak English very well, that means even if your Spanish is very poor, you can still volunteer there as a trekking guide. If you want to do the Environmental Education work you should speak already Spanish, so that the local children can understand you.
Leon is a great city to live. It is quite safe there and there are plenty of facilities and you will find there everything you need, like markets, supermarkets, cinema, swimming pool, gym and a good night life.
So I highly recommend Sonati. I had a really wonderful time there and so many unique experiences.
