Love Volunteers

Love Volunteers is a fast-growing organization founded by a brother-sister team to provide life-changing and impactful adventures abroad. Medical Volunteer Placement

Music Teaching

Agape Volunteers has recently set up a music school the town of Aboadze, providing education, tuition, and instruments to students who otherwise could not afford schooling at all. This school is entirely volunteer-run, with free lessons provided to students in the local community. To sign up for this project, you should be competent and confident in your musical instrument, have a good knowledge of music theory, and have basic musical score knowledge – however, you don’t need background experience in teaching in a classroom. Throughout your stay, you’ll teach lessons to students of different ability levels, but they all will be enthusiastic about learning how to play their instruments and learn how to pursue a future in music.

Medical Care

Another amazing opportunity that you can sign up for through Agape Volunteers is their Ghana medical program, where you’ll help lessen the burden on local medical staff who are overstretched. As a volunteer, you will be able to enhance your own medical training while helping those in need – but you must have completed at least one year of medical school or be a qualified nurse or doctor to participate. You’ll start with shadowing an on-duty doctor for a few days to learn local medical care techniques, and after that, you’ll be able to work on your own in a more self-driven placement with duties typically including making rounds, prescribing and distributing basic medicines, dressing wounds, and assisting with births. The region where you’ll work has high rates of HIV/AIDS, so you must be prepared to work with many patients who suffer from the disease – part of your job will be to guide them through treatment. You also will encounter patients with tuberculosis, another disease common in this part of Africa, and you will be assisting local staff with diagnosis and treatment for patients seeking help. You also will have the opportunity to work in a trauma unit to treat common minor injuries during the day, while assisting during nighttime hours with deliveries in the maternity ward. This program is excellent for medical students or professionals looking to gain a new perspective on your work, learn about different medical treatment techniques, and provide much-needed assistance to a hospital in great need overseas.

I had a fantastic time in Ghana and while it was a long time I was there, it went unbelievably quickly. I was teaching in 3 different schools and taught in the church every weekday. I also managed to play in church a couple of times! All the children were so motivated and ambitious learners and they progressed quick, I felt a bit guilty leaving after all their commitment! I was surprised how much I enjoyed Takoradi and the local area, it’s a beautiful city and I was shown all corners of it. I think my favourite experience of it was going to the beach there at 6am to see it bustling with people running, swimming, playing football and just socialising. The beach near where I was staying, ‘Paradise’ was too one of my favourite places and enjoyed taking the children there and teaching them to swim. I had only planned to go once or twice, but every weekend they asked to go again!

Naturally Africa Volunteers

Turtle Conservation and Ecotourism Program

As a volunteer, you’ll help keep sea turtles and their habitat safe while working alongside the local community building relationships and helping them to benefit from financial, social, and environmental efforts. There are three species of turtles that nest on the beaches of Ghana, including the olive ridley, the leatherback, and the green turtle, each of which is endangered – your responsibilities will include beach patrols, research, educating the community about the importance of marine conservation, training and working with local guides on the eco-tours, and interacting with visiting tourists. During your stay, you’ll live in the Green Turtle Lodge at the beach, and will be provided with three meals per day. This is a great way to unplug and truly immerse yourself in the community: there’s no wifi and cell phone reception is rather poor, but you’ll be able to play board games, go to the beach, go hiking or canoeing, and much more during your free time.

Orphan and Vulnerable Children Project

If you are more interested in working with children, Naturally Africa Volunteers’ Ghana orphan and vulnerable children program might be the right fit for you. Throughout the country, there are government and privately-owned children’s home for youth up to the age of 18. These homes all have very basic and limited resources, and some house more than 150 children. They have limited schooling supplies and toys, and some even have trouble feeding all of their residents, so with your help, the growth and quality of life of these children can improve so they can have a better future. As a volunteer, you’ll provide love, care, and attention to vulnerable children by planning and providing extracurricular activities, including sports, music, and games, helping with extra studies and beach excursions, changing diapers and bottle-feeding babies, doing laundry, helping children get ready for school, bringing them back to their dorms after classes, preparing lunches, teaching personal hygiene, playing and counseling children, and supervising day-to-day activities. During your stay, you’ll have support and guidance from project leaders to make sure you have the best experience possible while helping to further the important work done in these children’s homes.

Volunteer for Mental Health and Psychology in Ghana

Your duties depend on your education and work experience. If you have little to no experience in the field, your role will be mostly observational. Another excellent organization you should check out, A Broader View offers 245 different volunteer travel placements in 25 countries worldwide, with projects available in teaching, development, childcare, conservation, and much more. As a registered nonprofit organization, trips with A Broader View may even be tax-deductible for volunteers – and placements in Ghana start from $820 for your first week. In Ghana, you’ll volunteer in a small town in the Volta Region, where 95% of the population lives in rural areas and relies largely on agriculture. During your stay, you’ll live with a host family or onsite at an orphanage, depending on the program you sign up for, and there will be plenty of time on weekends to explore the area and get to know your fellow volunteers and your community.

Teaching Mission

One of the amazing projects you can sign up for in Ghana with A Broader View is a teaching mission in a rural community to help provide children with a free education. You will volunteer in local preschools, as well as primary and secondary schools assisting in a number of subjects such as math, science, geography, business education, computer training, English, art, and music. Through these courses, you will help local children to receive a quality education, which will help to prepare them for a successful future. While you don’t need any teaching experience to participate, you do need to be least 17 years old to travel on your own. This is a great program for self-motivated travelers, as there is often very little direct supervision within the classroom – so be prepared to take charge of your students and get engaged!

Medical/Health Care Program

A Broader View’s medical/health care program in Kasoa, Ghana is a wonderful opportunity for those volunteers with medical training or who are currently in a medical or nursing program. In many rural communities such as the ones you’ll visit in Ghana, individuals and families face higher poverty rates, which can lead to the spread of illnesses and diseases such as diarrhea, malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Unfortunately, quality and accessible medical care can be difficult to find in these smaller communities – your job as a volunteer will be to provide extra resources to local doctors and nurses while also learning about different medical and healthcare techniques than you might usually encounter in the US. The level of hands-on work you will be able to take part in is dependent on your qualifications as well as the needs of the clinic you’ll volunteer in, but regardless, you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside local staff and learn about their practices. You must be at least 18 years old to participate, and you must have medical credentials or be enrolled in graduate school – you’ll also be asked to bring along some of your own medical supplies, such as gloves, masks, and scrubs. This project lasts one to eight weeks, and you’ll have weekends and evenings free for sightseeing while you’re in Ghana.

Global Nomadic

Founded in 2009, Global Nomadic provides degree- and career-related volunteer abroad programs, teaching placements, and internships for travelers who’d like to boost their resumes and job prospects by working with NGOs overseas. Right now, Global Nomadic is offering one placement in Ghana: a public health internship in the capital city of Accra.

Public Health Internship

Through this program, you’ll mentor and help with the training of peer educators, serve as a community field officer, and provide assistance to local organizations that educate communities about public health issues, particularly to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS. Right now, the HIV/AIDS prevalence in Ghana is about 1.32%, and is considered stable – however, that’s almost a quarter-of-a-million people living with the disease, many of whom face stigma about HIV and a lack of proper prevention and treatment. Through your internship, you’ll help Global Nomadic and NGO partners spread awareness of protection and treatment, and you’ll help design and carry out projects such as forming mobile health units, conducting surveys, and assisting with research. These programs target populations at risk of contracting HIV, such as commercial sex workers, long distance drivers, women of childbearing age, youth out of school, and other groups. During your stay, you’ll live in a guest house or with a local host family, and when you’re not working alongside your program staff and fellow volunteers, you’ll have plenty of time to explore Accra and learn about Ghanaian culture. To sign up, you must be at least 18 years old, able to stay for at least four weeks on your internship, and be physically fit and able to work in a hot climate. Global Nomadic also asks that you be adventurous, flexible, culturally sensitive, and be motivated to work on infectious disease projects with a focus on HIV/AIDS.

If you’re in high school and want to volunteer overseas, look no further than Global Leadership Adventures! Children of Africa Program

Through GLA’s Children of Africa program in Ghana, you’ll volunteer at a village primary school, explore national monuments, learn about social issues facing women and children, go hiking, learn traditional African dance and percussion, and really immerse yourself in the Ghanaian culture as you help support local children in need. Since community service is the key component to this trip, you will help to teach children in a variety of environments, including a traditional classroom or an orphanage, oftentimes working with no electricity and only a chalkboard – plus your own creativity and skills. Aside from teaching, you may also help make bricks to construct new school facilities, or play soccer with the local youth. No matter what types of volunteer projects you take on, you’ll be providing a much-appreciated service to the children in your host community. In addition to volunteering with the children, you’ll be able to try out hands-on cultural experiences, such as cloth dying, drumming, and native language crash courses. You’ll also have the great opportunity to learn about history, traditional religion, gender constructs, and the tribal system. This amazing opportunity lasts two to three weeks, and starts at $3,399, and includes a total of 40 to 60 hours of community service – excellent for college applications!

Sports Service Adventure

Another opportunity to check out with Global Leadership Adventures is their sports service adventure in Ghana – on this trip, you’ll learn about the sporting culture within your host community as you play and socialize the local children. As a volunteer, you will make a positive impact on children’s health and development by engaging them in education and fitness initiatives – plus you’ll get to spend much of your time on the beach planning sports and health-themed day camp activities. By encouraging and developing a healthy lifestyle, you will help to put these children on the path to a successful and healthy future. During this program, you also will have the wonderful opportunity to help with initiatives that encourage girls to participate in sports – a rare occurrence in Ghana currently. The tuition for this 14-day program is $3,399, and includes about 34 hours of community service alongside travel and adventure.

I have traveled with GLA twice. My first program was to Ghana in 2012, and I recently returned from Tanzania a few days ago. I cannot fault GLAs programs in any way; they offer such a well tailored blend of cultural immersion, leadership skills and social skills that I don’t see offered elsewhere. The leadership aspect of GLA programs really does stand out from others, and it has certainly made me a more active leader personally, in my community and amongst my peers. More than anything though, I believe GLA programs inspire students like me to make a change in our lifetimes. I for one am hoping to go into the NGO sector, to work in microfinance, and this was inspired by my trip to Ghana and reinforced by my trip to Tanzania. Furthermore, GLAs support is excellent, and there is someone to talk to from the moment you show interest in GLA to post-trip chit chat. And of course, the safety of students is also GLAs top priority, and their 5 point safety system put my parents at ease. It could always be noticed that this was being implemented and checked when we were in-country. Overall, I would highly recommend GLA – and after two programs with them I believe I have a good gauge of their quality.

Journalism Program

If you have ever wanted to be a journalist and travel the world, then Fronteering’s journalism project in Accra might be the perfect volunteer opportunity for you! For four to eight weeks, you will work alongside the staff at a local newspaper, gathering stories and learning about journalism in Ghana as well as following up-to-date activities and stories from the capital city. A few of your tasks will include gathering news, writing stories, performing research, assisting with investigation reports, and covering different conferences during your stay. With all of this in mind, you must have experience in graphic design or website design to sign up, and you can expect to work eight hours a day, five days per week, with the remaining two days to sightsee and learn about the culture of your host country.

Hospital Care Program

If you are more of a medical student than a journalist, then check out this hospital care program in Ghana’s capital city of Accra. During this project, you will assist in local hospitals and clinics, helping with tasks such as checking basic vitals – blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, and weight – plus helping the doctors perform abdominal scans; assisting in the delivery, antenatal, and postnatal care or mothers and newborns; and assisting in basic administration of medications. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about healthcare practices outside of your home country, and to provide hands-on care to a community that needs it.

International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ)

Rural Construction and Renovation Project

International Volunteer HQ’s wide variety of projects available right now in Ghana includes a rural construction and renovation program, where you’ll help improve infrastructure throughout small communities, focusing on children’s homes, clinics, community centers, toilet facilities, and schools. Some of your tasks will include painting, brick laying, plastering, digging, block shaping, carpentry, steel bending, mortar mixing, and much more. During your stay, you also may have the chance to meet chiefs and community elders who will teach you about the different cultures within their communities. You should enjoy the outdoors and have a good level of physical fitness to truly enjoy this placement.

Agriculture Project

Another outdoorsy program you may want to sign up for with IVHQ is their agriculture project in Ghana, which focuses on providing sustainable food for local children. As a volunteer, you’ll help with both crop farming and animal farming, which includes:

1. Clearing land for growing crops
2. Assisting with fertilizing the land
3. Planting and nurturing crops
4. Teaching farming techniques to local staff
5. Assisting with stock purchases and care

The produce you‘ll help to grow is donated to children’s homes with a goal of supplementing their healthy food intake. Throughout your program, you can expect to work for most of the day, though during the hottest part of the afternoon you’ll be able to supplement your activities by helping teachers in their classrooms. While you don’t need previous agricultural experience to sign up, a background in this area can be helpful for developing new projects and teaching farming techniques to local workers so they can more effectively and efficiently carry out their work. Similarly to IVHQ’s construction project in Ghana, this program is great for volunteers who have a good level of physical fitness, would like to work outside, and don’t mind getting dirty.

The experience of volunteering in another country is an awe-inspiring and humbling one, and being able to feel that while having an amazing team to back you up is essential for having a positive experience. IVHQ was fantastic in providing everything I would need to prepare for my volunteering away, and partnered with a fantastic in-country company that allowed me to fully experience my volunteer placement and help with anything that I needed.
