International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ)

IVHQ’s volunteer programs start at $20/day (meals and lodging included), with stays in volunteer houses or host families for cultural immersion. IVHQ provides airport pickup, orientation, and 24/7 support. Free time and weekends are yours to explore, with cultural activities.

Since 2007, IVHQ has placed 130,000+ volunteers, partnering with local organizations to benefit communities and animals. Explore IVHQ’s dog-focused projects across four continents, each welcoming animal lovers to hands-on shelter work.

In Cape Town, feed, bathe, and help rehome cats and dogs in a community shelter. Near Seoul, care for over 100 rescued dogs at a mountain sanctuary — walking, socializing, and supporting adoptions.

In Namibia, join wildlife conservators tending to wild dogs among lions and cheetahs, tracking and feeding animals in a stunning reserve. Finally, in Lisbon, work in a garden sanctuary to feed, play with, and prepare dogs for adoption.

GoEco

GoEco’s programs let you volunteer in dog rescue and welfare worldwide. Working in shelters or sanctuaries, you’ll feed, clean, bathe, and socialize dogs, and assist with basic medical care.

One project in Sri Lanka cares for over 2,000 rescued dogs in a coastal sanctuary, offering hands-on rehabilitation amid tropical scenery. Operating in 40+ countries, GoEco provides 24/7 support, orientation, meals, and volunteer-house lodging.

On days off, join cultural tours, beach trips, or yoga sessions. With group activities and travel grants, GoEco builds a supportive community of animal lovers.

Maximo Nivel

Maximo Nivel offers dog volunteer and internship programs in Costa Rica, Guatemala (Antigua) and Peru (Cusco), partnering with local shelters to care for stray and abandoned dogs. Tasks include feeding, cleaning, bathing, socializing, administering meds, supporting sterilization campaigns, and educating communities about spay/neuter and nutrition.

Volunteers stay with host families, receive meals and 24/7 support. No Spanish is required—free tutoring is available. With year-round start dates and strong local expertise, Maximo Nivel delivers structured, immersive dog-care experiences.

Projects Abroad

Projects Abroad, established in 1992, offers structured animal welfare placements — globally and in Argentina — to bolster resumes.

In Córdoba, volunteers split time between a vet clinic and a dog shelter caring for 150+ rescues. You’ll shadow vets, assist with feeding, washing, socializing, treatments, and support adoption events. No experience is required, but you can observe surgeries and administer medications under supervision.

Volunteers live with host families, receive meals, orientation, and 24/7 support. With 1-week minimum stays year-round, Projects Abroad provides cultural immersion and meaningful dog-care work.

Involvement Volunteers International (IVI)

IVI runs animal shelter projects where volunteers feed, clean, treat, exercise, and socialize dogs, assist vets with spay/neuter and vaccination drives, and conduct community outreach.

In Puerto Escondido, Mexico, help with feeding, grooming, enclosure cleaning, dog walking, shelter renovations, and rescues, staying in shared hostels.

In Arusha, Tanzania, aid a vet treating domestic and farm animals—walking, feeding, vaccinating, and socializing shelter pets—with housing in volunteer houses or host families.

In Kathmandu, Nepal, assist in rescuing, treating, feeding, cleaning, walking, and sterilizing stray dogs, staying in central housing.

Volunteering Solutions (VolSol)

Volunteering Solutions offers a wide array of animal volunteering projects, including a Dog Care Project in southern Sri Lanka. Volunteers join a leading charity caring for over 2,500 strays in a free-roaming sanctuary and on-site clinic. You’ll feed, groom, clean, socialize puppies and disabled dogs, assist with rehabilitation (hydrotherapy, wheelchair therapy), and support daily operations.

Accommodations are beachside volunteer houses with meals provided; weekends are free for exploring Ahangama, Mirissa, and Tangalle’s beaches.

Volunteers must be 16+, fit, and ready to work hands-on with dogs.

Global Vision International (GVI)

GVI offers a unique dog program – the Rescue Dogs for Wildlife Conservation in Zimbabwe, where volunteers travel to Monde Village near Victoria Falls for two to 24 weeks, contributing 35 hours/week training rescue dogs to track poachers and support wildlife.

Under professional handlers, you feed, groom, exercise, assist canine first aid and detection exercises. Accommodation is in a solar-powered tented camp with communal facilities and meals. On-site training, 24/7 support, immersive cultural experiences make GVI ethical and educational.

Barking Up New Journeys!

Volunteering abroad with dogs is more than just an off-the-beaten-path travel idea – it’s a life-changing adventure for you and the animals you help. Through these programs, you’ll not only provide much-needed care and love to dogs (and other animals), but also gain unforgettable cultural experiences and personal growth.

Whether you’re walking rescued strays on a beach in Sri Lanka, bottle-feeding puppies in Peru, or training ex-shelter dogs to protect wildlife in Africa, you become part of a global community of animal lovers making a real difference. Each of the organizations highlighted – from IVHQ’s affordable, widespread projects to GVI’s innovative conservation efforts – offers something unique, but all share a commitment to better futures for our four-legged friends.

If your wanderlust comes with a soft spot for wet noses and wagging tails, consider one of these volunteer opportunities for your next trip. You’ll return home with incredible stories, new friends across the world (human and canine alike), and the heartwarming satisfaction of knowing you helped give dogs abroad a brighter, safer, happier life.

So pack your bags, grab a leash, and get ready for the most rewarding journey – after all, there’s no better travel companion than a dog you’ve helped rescue!

Safe travels and happy volunteering!
