Overview

Overview

The Atlantic Whale and Dolphin Foundation is a low-cost volunteer organisation that conducts whale and dolphin research out in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. We focus on marine conservation, research and education, with the mission of raising awareness and inspiring action. Volunteers collect data on whale and dolphin behaviour and collaborate with the Atlantic Ocean Cetacean Network to conduct research on cetacean species in the Atlantic Oceans. We also do educational outreach, free programs for children and occasional beach clean-ups.

I didn't expect much as this is a low cost program. But once i got there and settled in, I didn't really want to come home. Everyone is like a little a family in the volunteer house. Such lovely coordinators too. I was there for 2 weeks and went on the whale watching boats 6 times. They cost £50 a ticket normally for tourists so i got my money's worth from that alone. I learned a lot about the science from Emma, she was really enthusiastic and patient with me - the fin id work is tricky but i got there in the end. The food is as good as whoever is cooking it, basic but filling. The accommodation was bunk beds, clean sheets and a comfy pillow. I will be back in the summer, this has been brilliant! Thanks AWDF!

Wonderful whales. Wonderful people. Wonderful Tenerife. I miss it so dearly. Please come if you want to feel good for doing good things.

I had a great experience in whale and dolphin conservation program. I’ve grown a lot and wishing to have another chance to be in Tenerife doing such meaningful things.

This experience has been so rewarding, I have learned so much, it is both challenging and great fun. I have had the opportunity to work with some great people, and forge part of a successful coordinator team. I would recommend taking the leap and joining the team as a volunteer or as a coordinator.

Could not recommend this experience any more. Was incredible, saw dolphins and whales every day on the boats, plus so many exciting things to do on days off! All the volunteers and co ordinators are super lovely and make you feel at home. I will definitely be returning in the near future!

Came to volunteer with AWdF for 10 days for uni work experience. It was amazing, I absolutely love the work that you get to do here, it is honestly a dream! I met so many lovely people who were also volunteering and whilst out on the boats.
We got the opportunity to do other actives in the time I was there including a Try-dive (I saw a green turtle!), surfing and walking the dogs at the K9 rescue center.
Big thank you's to Nicole, Katrina, Dan and Luke for running the place so smoothly and thank you to the other volunteers for being so welcoming and friendly.
I have really missed this place since coming home, I will definitely be returning!
